Culture Flea market is approaching, the last day to book a table is on Wednesday 25 January 2012.You can take so many things or as little things to sell as long as they are from other countries .. Do not miss the chance to make some money! I have been busy putting up posters around townn last week. We want to thank the SFI, Lulea University of Technology, Ulkraft, Tourist office, Asplund's Kids children's clothes and Wok & Roll because we put up our poster on their premises. If you have nothing to sell, you are also welcome to visit our cultural flea market, you might find something interesting! We have Italian coffee with chocolate and cookies for sale too! Welcome at bargain!
Which country are you from? Do you want to start your own language group?
Right now we have three new language group, it is Spanish, Chinese and English groups.
Chinese Speaking Group
I will be leading the Chinese speaking group, and we thought we'd get together once a week on saturday afternoon starting from Feburary. This is not a language class, you have to communicate the basic level to join this group. There are some cultural activities such as Mahjong, Chinese chess and Asian food gathering, and each group must decide what they want to do. It takes only four persons to could start a group so if you can speak madarin, do not hesitate to join the group by contacting me today!
English Speaking Group
I think the English team has the potential to become the largest group .. because most people can speak English. This group will be lead by a young woman from the U.S.A and she will keep us updated on their ideas later this month.
Spanish Speaking Group
This group will be led by two leaders, Juan and Bertalina from Columbia. Today there are already seven Swedish women who are learning Spanish and would like to practice that language .. If you speak Spanish and want to improve your Swedish, this is a great opportunity to exchange languages with this grupp.

31 May 2011 - Hiking at Vitberget
23 May 2011 - Theme (Singapore & Malaysia)
Here are some photos taken at our Tuesday cooking club meeting. Jane and Gen did a great presentation about Malaysia and Singapore food and culture. Jane made a poster about some facts about living, currency, lifestyle and culture of Malaysia while Gen told us what is most significant about Singapore. Some visitors find it very interesting uneven thought it was difficult to understand why Singapore are not allow to eat chewing gums, throws rubbish on streets and even not flushing public toilet is considered as a offence. The chicken curry Gen made was fantastic! Even Birgritt who is afraid of spicy food helped herself on a second round! The fried rice Jane made was full of asian flavours..the usage of saffran and curry spice definately gave the dish a special "Asian touch" I made a Penarakan dessert made of corn and coconut milk. All the food was well appreciated, thank you Gen and Jane for such a wonderful team work!
Our next event will be hiking at vitberget on 31 May 2011 Kl 12-14. We shall meet at Bilda at 12. For the time being, we only have 3 cars that take us there. Currently, all the seats were taken, if you want to hang along, please contact me at [javascript protected email address] before 30 May. I see what I can do.
Please bring this for the hike:-
1. Good walking shoes
2. A haver sack
3. Lunch
4. Drink
If it´s rain on 31 May, we shall bring forward the event and then we can have lunch together at Bilda instead. We shall discuss about our summer and autum activities.
See you on 31 May 2011 at Bilda kl 12!
I just started to blogg about my thoughts about human right, justice , intergration work etc.. check it out!
17 May 2011 Theme - Italy!!!!
Hi all,
Carlo did great on cooked his "Perfetto" Italian lasagna and salad . I never taste a lasagna that is so juicy and full of flavors! It was a really good meal! Everyone seem to be very satisfied! I also did some Italian antipasto with anchovi, tomato, mushrooms, olive oil and salted biscuits with Gen and Ramazan help. This meeting, many people showed up! We have one new member from Singapore while the others are no longer strangers to each other .. all of them could quickly jump into conversations like friend who has not met for a long time! Because there were so many people the was lasagna was almost finished directly! Now you know, if you do not want to miss the wonderful food, came earlier!
I noticed most Italian food is made up of three basic color, red, white and green as their flag. I had learned about the terms used in the Italian dinner table.
- Antipasto - these are hot and cold appetizers.
- Primo (first course), usually a few main dish such as pasta, risotto or soup. Usually there are also vegetarian options.
- Secondo (second course), who also is the main dish, usually fish or meat; usually veal is the use of meat, including beef became popular after World War II and game is very popular, mostly in Tuscany.
- Contorno (The Side Dish) is usually a salad or vegetables. - Dolce, there is no better way to end your meal with dessert.
We played "Flags guessing game" hosted by Malin and we managed to guess more than 20 flags correctly, we have many talented people here! At the meeting, I heard Carlo said to another member "Here we are family, we joke and do not take things seriously, I feel at home here!" Those words really warm my heart, if I may briefly describe the Italian, I would say that they are very social, very family oriented, and usually a loyal people. Generous host and excellent cooks.
We also watched some fun and interesting video about the Italian practical jokes and hand guesture. We had some interesting discussion about hand guesture from other countries. That I think was so interesting! Just before we finish, Tage asked the group if anyone wants any bicycle. He had four bicycles at home that he would like to give away! All four bicycles was immediately taken! The bicycle will be perfect for Ramazan who had his foot operated recently, the bicycle will be very useful for him. I am so happy for his sake, thanks Tage for the bicycles!
We meet once a week to eat together, we chat, laugh a whole lot, sharing wonderful moments and life stories, spend quality time togehter both indoors and outdoors, we enjoy each other friendship. Today, free bike and now through newspaper report and personal contact EFS would like to sponsor us their cafe with a great kitchen for our cooking club! There is also a large billiard table, a piano, TV room and a little game to EFS cafe and it will be the perfect place for us to be there to cook together. We will take a short trip after the meeting on Tuesday. See, good thing attracts good people!I am so grateful with people who really wanting to help others!
Next week is our theme, Singapore and Malaysia. Jean from Malaysia, Gene and I are from Singapore will be presenting food and culture of our hometown. Besides food from these two countries, we will also share our language and culture during this meeting. See you there!!

Hi everybody!
We had a fantastic time at the barbacue picnic last Tuesday. I am so glad many find Kyrkholmen a good new place to venture. If the weather allow I will definately organise more outdoor activities in the summer if anyone interested to join. As you can see from our slide, we had spicy grilled fish, halal sausage, German cook egg, Italian sallad, chocolate chips cookies, Ethopia sausage, BBQ american mashmallow with cookies, grilled white chocolate with banana etc.. We also played kubb before and after food, I am very happy some of the members who never played this game find it very exciting and fun! Despite of a newly operated fee, Ramazan still want to participate in the game! Also it did´nt stop Itfu who was wearing a 3 inch high heel from running.
Our cooking club theme for next week is Italian! Come & taste the real Italian food from Carlo who is from Italy. He will be cooking his famous lasagna and Italian sallad! Carlo is a really funny retired who joke all the time! There´s often alot of laughter when he is around. I will be playing Italian music and may be share a few funny Italian joke videos from Youtude.
There will be cookbooks and some travel book about Italy..so do not miss this exciting Italian experience! If you are not a member of the cooking club and would like to join us on Tuesday, please send me a email.

Hi all,
Now I have moved the language café language cafe to Bilda on Stationsgatan 15 from 3 May, it feels really nice to be there! I want to thank so many of you who wrote to me with so much encouragement. I'm really touched! Your kind words have given me a lot of positive energy and strength. Thanks again! I am so glad that everyone seems to like to be on the new premise and it feels great to have finally have some privacy, I am so glad that everyone seem to be very happy about the new premise. Here is a map to Bilda you are so welcome there! This week was my turn to cook, so I made the Malaysian curry chicken fried rice, while Meyri prepared Ethopian coffee ceromony. Ethiopian coffee ceremony is an integral part of their social and cultural life. An invitation to attend a ceremony coffee is a sign of friendship or respect and is an excellent example of Ethiopian hospitality. Perform the ceremony is almost obligatory in the presence of a visitor, regardless of time of day. Do not hurry, however - this special ceremony may take a few hours. I had to upload image on coffee ceromony below.
Are you eager to attend a barbecue party at Kyrkholmen island? To do this you must register either by phone or e-mail (esteeweng@gmail.com) We gather on Bilda (Stationsgatan 15) at 12 on 10 May and then travel with three cars. We have only 6 seats left. Some members will cycle there. If you want to travel with us by car, please call me or email me before May 9 (Monday)
What should you bring? You can take any barbecue food, barbecue accessories, drinks and a sitting mat, We have wood or coal is with us. We will play bowler after food, so it can would be good if you take on the training shoes.

We were very pampered today at the cooking club, Mariya, Meyti & Iftu made one of the most delicious Ethopian food for us! We felt so fortunate! I love the lamb beri beri stew, this was so aromatic and full of flavours! The biddeena (Soft bread) were so moisted and tasty and the stir fried spenach together with the bean paste were excellent! We learn how to eat with our 5 fingers and it´s a real unique experience for us! What a treat! I understand from the 3 ladies that this is a special dish Ethopian made for very special occassion like wedding, birthday and other traditional festive seasons. If you like to cater this food for your special event, do not hesitate to contact Mariya at mariya@oromo.se she will be more then happy to cook for you! Here are some pictures taken today :

Tuesday 5 April 2011
This week, Malin from Sweden and Ramazah from Iran had cooked for the cooking club members! Malin made a reindeer stew with smashed patatoes and lingon jam while Ramazah made his Speciality "Iran beef stew". This was a uniques experience for some members because that was their first time they ate reindeer. Very creamy..they said. Ramazah´s stew has also very special flavour of curry, corriander and other spices. I enjoyed the food very much! Thank you Malin and Ramazah for the delicious food! After the food, I challenged the group a food guessing game. Members were divided into 2 group, who ever who guessed the most food correctly, win. I am so glad everyone seem to enjoy the game very much! Next week Mariya, Meyti and Iftu will cook Ethopian food for us!!!
Thursday 7 April 2011
On Thursday, I challenge our group members on some team building games. We are crossing river with feet tied so we learn how to balance and improve body communication skills. Another challenge is to blind fold a member and get the non speaking swedish member to give direction to the person blindfolded. This is a good training not only to learn how to give directions but also team work spirits! There were lots of laughters..even tears from joy. I will definately continue this challenge in the next few week ahead. Gold City Petanque Club offers 10 tickets to our language cafe guests free boules session. Come and try this noble ball game Thursday, April 14 between 12:00 to 14:00. There are only 5 vacancie available now, to make reservation write to me at[javascript protected email address]. There were all sort of Fika from savory to sweet , even spicy! I would like to thanks everyone for sharing their wonderful food, friendship and culture! At the favourite cook book sharing session, I am amazed that many of the members were so brave and creative! They dare took the 2 mintues presentation opportunity to stand infornt of a big group of people to talked about food culture, eating habits, tradition food, even description of how the fika was prepared. Good job! I am so proud of them! This to me is very important as it showed how keen everybody are wanting to improve the language. Our theme for next week is "Taste & Smell" each of us will bring 1 or 2 spice or ingrdient from other country for everybody to taste or smell! We will also pay game with this spice and learn new ingredient and words.

27 March 2011
Hi everybody!
Our cooking club is growing gradually and I am so excited that our club has caught the attention of the press again! Norran is coming to visit us on Tuesday! Our theme for this Tuesday meeting is International Fika plus favourite cook book presentation. Each member will bring a small portion of bakery from their hometwon to share among the members. Every members will be given 2 minutes to do a presentation of their favourite cook book in Swedish! Starting from this week, I will be writing a new column to spotlight a member of our group through interview. I think this is a great way to present the new Swedish here in Skellefteå. My first guest is Miss Jeri Emeru from Ethopia ,one of Sweden's fastest runners living in Skellefteå. Jeri Emeru who came to Sweden as asylum seekers in summer
Here´s is some fact on Jeri Emeru by Västerbotten Radio P4-
Jeri Emeru from Ethiopia have had great success in running events in Sweden.
- It's pretty simple games, simply because I always liked to run, "she explains.
So far she has been involved in four competitions and coach Kent Norstrom is impressed.
- She has shown good results in all of them. In addition, she is not really used this climate so it is incredibly talented as she is, "he says.
Jeri Emerus results in 5000 and 10 000 places her among Sweden's best runners.
She got a 11 years old track record at DM in Skellefteå and Umeå won the Quarter-Marathon, where she got a 19 years old course record.
Race condition means that the times she does come with the Swedish athletics annual statistics, but she may not compete in national team because she is not a Swedish citizen.
- You wish you could do as it is with some business leaders that they may be a bit faster citizenship in Sweden. I hope that we can help her with this too. Because if nobody does anything it can go five years before she becomes a Swedish citizen, "said Lennart Jonsson, who is club director in Skellefteå AIK athletics club.
- I really hope that she is through our help, and may remain, and may develop and become better and can move forward in one way or another, "he says.
And Jeri Emerus personal goals for the future is to break records in both 5000 and 10 000 feet.
When I asked Jeri about how she is doing recently, she said she has been quite down due to the long cold winter and her limited ability to communicate.
She felt very lonely and longing to have new friends. She came to the Language cafe with a good friend Sara. Both of them studies Swedish at the local church
for one and half hour everyday for 2 months now. Jeri said it´s not much to do here in Skellefteå, there is not much activities here. She hope that the language café will help her to be better in Swedish and hopefully she could find a reason to stay here later. She is very happy to have found us and she look forward for more meetings!
The Ethopian bread Jeri made is absolutely delicious! I never seen a bread so big 40 x 30 cm!!! We ate the bread with a special vegetable stew made by Sara.
I am so proud Jeri put in a lot of effort to explained to us how the food was prepared. Her determinations to success make me and others feel very encouraging!
Hope to see you in our next café meeting!!
